Currently our backyard is a mixture of weeds and winter rye. We need to put in a new grass, but are not sure what to use. We put down St Aug sod several years ago, but it did not survive. Most of our backyard is shaded by a large Live Oak, and we also have dogs that are hard on the lawn. The drainge is pretty good, as the back part of the lawn slopes down to a small retaining wall and a street. Do you have any suggestions for a hardy, shade tolerant grass? We are open to sod or seed.

Sorry, I should have mentioned that we live in Dallas. We have not fertilized the backyard (organically or otherwise) in years and the yard is not completely shaded - we get decent morning sun, but afternoon sun is blocked by the house and tree.

Thanks!

Your St Aug died because you did not water it. If you are not going to water it, then nothing will grow.

You might consider putting several inches of shredded cedar mulch under the trees. Dogs love the mulch and cedar does not track into the house like some bark mulches seem to do.
