I need someone to tell us what kind of weeds we are battling. My husband spent quite a while last month spraying with the recommended vinegar mixture. The weeds turned brown, but came back multiplied. The first couple of years in this location, we had no weeds. These migrated from an unkept yard behind us and they keep moving farther. The root balls are very large and almost impossible to dig up without leaving many large holes. The plant is not so obnoxious as to have grassburrs or thorns, but it looks bad because it grows so much taller than our bermuda grass. My husband keeps the mower set as high as possible, per Howard's instructions. We don't water more than once or twice a week. The grass on this weed is about a 1" blade narrowing at the top and grows about 12" tall. The weed popper type tool doesn't work because of the large root ball. Can you tell me what I am dealing with and what to do? It has taken up about 1/3 of our lawn at this point. I have seen the recommendations for CGM to be applied in June and Fall, but we missed June and by Fall, we may have a complete lawn of this.
Help?

It is difficult to ID from a written description. Usually weeds are only present in soils which are lacking in nutrients. That is nature's way of balancing the health of the soil.
Has your lawn become more shaded than in previous years due to growing trees?

Sounds a lot like Dallisgrass. I have the same problem and am still trying to figure out a plan of attack.

I'm sorry, but I can't help with the identification of your weed based on your description, but I do have a suggestion which should help your Bermuda grass to fend off the invader. Bermuda grass should be cut low, not high (1 1/2" per HG's Plants of the Metroplex III). Continue to water deeply and infrequently. Continue to ammend the soil with your organic products and your Bermuda should be able to crowd out the weed and regain your lawn. Bermuda (common, not Tif) is tough turfgrass which is invasive by its own nature.
