We'd like to plant some "reds" in our beds in our new home this fall. We currently have the Red Leaf Barberry but don't like the nasty thorns. Is the Burning Bush a good substitute?

What luck have others in the metroplex had with "reds" in both sun and shade?

Thanks

There are dozens, the two that come to the top of my list are Turks Cap and Mexican Firebush. If you are interested in native or adapted plants, there is a free or cheap cd called "Texas smartscape". It is an interactive cd where you put in what you are looking for and it comes back with suggestions and pictures. You might say I want a plant that gets 4 feet tall and has red color in full sun. It will come back with different selections. Randy Weston, the owner of Weston Gardens near Ft. Worth is one of the authors. If you visit his place you can buy a plant and get the cd free. I have an extra copies if you want to come by McKinney on your way to Murphy.

Not all barberries have vicious thorns. My "rose glow" barberry does have pretty vicious thorns. It is beginning its third year and is really thriving. A truly beautiful barberry with fewer thorns is "crimson velvet". Ours is just a year old and has large velvety leaves. Nandinas are always reliable, and have reddish foliage.
