2-Butoxyethanol is a solvent in paints and surface coatings, as well as cleaning products and inks. Other products that contain 2-butoxyethanol include acrylic resin formulations, asphalt release agents, firefighting foam, leather protectors, oil spill dispersants, degreaser applications, and photographic strip solutions. Other products containing 2-butoxyethanol as a primary ingredient include some whiteboard cleaners, liquid soaps, cosmetics, dry cleaning solutions, lacquers, varnishes, herbicides, and latex paints.

2-Butoxyethanol is frequently found in popular cleaning products. It provides cleaning power and the characteristic odor of Windex and other glass cleaners. It is the main ingredient of many home, commercial and industrial cleaning solutions.

Found in: Window, kitchen and multipurpose cleaners.

Health Risks: 2-butoxyethanol is the key ingredient in many window cleaners and gives them their characteristic sweet smell. It belongs in the category of “glycol ethers,” a set of powerful solvents that don’t mess around.

Law does not require 2-butoxyethanol to be listed on a product’s label. According to the EPA’s Web site, in addition to causing sore throats when inhaled, at high levels glycol ethers can also contribute to narcosis, pulmonary edema, and severe liver and kidney damage. If you’re cleaning at home in a confined area, like an unventilated bathroom, you can actually end up getting 2-butoxyethanol in the air at levels that are higher than workplace safety standards.

Better Choice: Clean mirrors and windows with newspaper and diluted vinegar. For other kitchen tasks, stick to simple cleaning compounds . You can also make your own formulas with baking soda, vinegar and essential oils.

You left out one product you have recommended in the past and is being advertised as environmentally safe- the wonderful SIMPLE GREEN All-Purpose Cleaner.
Simple Green contains similar percentages of butyl cellosolve (2-butoxyethanol) as other cleaners (4-5%). That's because it is this solvent that does most of the work!

Amazing what a sweet smelling cleaner can do to marketing efforts! You may as well add mint oil to any of your standard cleaners and call it safe, biodegradeable, non-toxic, take your pick!

I just used the wonderful Simple Green BBQ Cleaner to clean my grill.
It contains the following:
Ingredient CAS Number Percent Range
Water 7732‐18‐5 ≥ 81%
2‐butoxyethanol 111‐76‐2 ≤ 5%
Sodium Citrate 68‐04‐2 ≤ 5%
Laureth‐7 Proprietary ≤ 1%
Triethanolamine 702‐72‐6 ≤ 1%
Sodium Nitrite 7632‐00‐0 ≤ 1%
Xanthan gum 11138‐66‐2 ≤ 1%
Butane 106‐97‐8 4%
Propane 74‐98‐6 1%

I do not spray it onto the grill itself just the outside.

Label states "Non-Toxic and biodegradeable Formula and VOC compliant. VOC free might be a stretch as 5% butoxyethanol would not pass. The non-toxic statement is covered by Howard above. The precautions also list a potential for "mild eye irritation after eye contact may occur associated with surfactant agents (polyethylene glycol ether derivatives)." The glycol ether in the formula is the butoxyethanol and is not considered a surfactant. The surfactant is Laureth-7.
