I am trying to make my own potting soil as recommended on the Dirt Doctor learning articles and it calls for coconut fiber and when I go to my garden centers they do not carry it but the local pet store carries coconut bark and i was wondering can the bark be used in place of the coconut fiber? I have no idea what the fiber looks like so not sure really what i am looking for. Thanks for any help anyone can provide.

Coconut fiber is also known as coir. Many independent garden centers carry it in bricks that have to be hydrated. These stores should carry it: http://www.dirtdoctor.com/Dirt-Doctor-O ... vq3933.htm

Thanks for the reply but I live in Corpus Christi so that would be quite a drive to get to any of those places you posted. I take it that the bark cannot be used then?

I don't know anything about the coconut bark, but can help you with your original quest -- to find coconut fiber. Lots of garden centers have it, but they sell it in rolls, or pieces. You've probably seen it and just didn't realize that's what it was (that's what happened to me, anyway...). It's the brown, wiry, peat-moss-looking stuff used to line hanging baskets. Check this out:

(by the way -- I'm not recommending Yardzooks -- I just wanted to give you a picture...)

Once you have your piece, or roll, you can cut or tear it to put it in your homemade potting mix. (It's MUCH easier to cut it, than tear it...)

Happy gardening!

Thanks TexDirt. That's great to know! :D I'm glad you found some AND I'm glad you came back and shared where you found it.
