Are there a lot of indoor plants? Sometime if the soil is kept too moist you can breed them like crazy. I assume this is an indoor problem?

Can you determine where the gnats are coming from?

Here's some information on gnats: http://www.dirtdoctor.com/Gnats_vq297.htm

we had a serious case of gnats from overwatering, or bad soil, or both.
advice from a former bartender - put capfull of sweet vermouth out overnight.
for plants, we set small glasses of sweet vermouth in our pots, it does trap the gnats. repeat every few days. have patience - could be used for household.
(also a little bleach down the drains in the office kitchen.... )
we also used orange oil spray judiciously, and also cooking oil around the rim of the pots.
