Just got a disturbing call about this tree near Pecan Valley.

According to the caller -- "Someone" has tried to cut the tree down. It has multiple ax wounds. They did not get the tree down, but did some real damage.

The caller is going to send photos of the damage.

Anyone know anything?

Here is the email and photos regarding the Bur Oak!

TO: Howard Garrett

A few days ago some delinquent angry youths took an ax to The Memorial Oak (located off of Winscott Road in Benbrook in a small municipal park adjacent to the #2 fairway of The Pecan Valley Golf Course below the Benbrook Lake dam).

Please see the attached photos. It appears that their intention was to fell the tree but they gave up after a time. I fear that they will return and continue to further harm the tree.

What can we do to stop them from finishing the job? Can they be arrested? Can we get the Police involved? Should the newspaper and media be called?

I went to the five or six closest homes and asked the homeowners to listen for ax sounds and if they are heard they should call the Benbrook police.

Also, based on what you see in the photos, what can be done to heal the wounds on the tree. Obviously I am deeply troubled about this crime and your reply is appreciated

It's really bad what these little thugs have done.

However, they haven't serious damage yet and the the tree should be fine.

Apply the Sick Tree Treatment and make sure the organic program is used around the tree and in the rest of the park.

For an oak tree that size, it'll be fine, but I'd definitely call the police, media, and city park's department. The more people involved and watching, the better.

The good news is that I'm unsure if there's a youth out there stubborn enough to hack away for 5-6 hours straight to take down that tree. No axe alone will do it in under an hour. The damage in the picture probably took them 10-20 minutes. Oaks are very hard wooded.
