Help! Mealy bugs are taking over my yard in Aledo. They first appeared in my roses and cosmos, and they have now spread to my native elms and oaks.

I have tried spraying Neem twice with no success. The ladybugs I set out flew away to greener pastures.

What else can I try? I know mealy bugs can destroy my small ornamental plants, but can they do serious damage to my trees? I have already lost two oaks to unknown causes in the past two years. I don't want to lose any more trees!

We've been invaded here in Hudson Oaks with either Mealy bugs or leaf hoppers or both. They are on our roses and practically every other ornamental, perennial plants, and smaller native trees in our gardens. We're tried neem, citrus oil (d-limonene), garlic pepper tea w/o success in totally eradicating them. Slight improvement was noticed since we used thec citrus oil and garlic pepper tea but it looks like several applications may be needed due to the heavy infestation. If you find something that works let us know.

Thanks for your reply. An arboritst stopped by the other day to look at a sick tree (not related to the bug invasion), and he identified the bugs as leaf hoppers. He said they wouldn't hurt the trees, but the roses, etc. need to be treated. Please let me know if you find a cure!

If they are the small white leaf hoppers, then you can ignore them completely. These bugs form a white, cottony mess on the stems of plants near the new growth. They look very sinister but they seem to do no damage. I fought them with water, orange oil spray, and molasses/seaweed sprays to no avail. So I let them live on and have only seen them grow larger and eventually disappear. No damage seemed to be left behind.
