I live in the Chicagoland area. There are about five different kinds of weeds in the garden. A couple of weeks ago, I spread some sugar and then watered. I heard that helps to enrich the soil.

I want to prep the garden for winter.

Some of my questions:

I still have weeds. Should I spread sugar again or just pull them? Is it possible to use too much sugar?

What soil amendments should I use and how do I use them, and when is a good time to use them?

I want healthy soil for an optimum garden. Any advice is greatly appreciated.
