In desperate need of help here... In Jan of this year we created a rock bed up both sides of our sidewalk. We removed sod, placed the metal edging down, added soil, put down week barrier and planted rows of boxwoods. On top of the barrier we layed down pea gravel, then we placed rolled river rock's on top of that (Grey in color). So this looks very sharp and clean, the problem is that my boxwoods are starting to die. In the fall I had growth and had to start cutting the hedges back, but as soon as it started getting hot they stopped growing all together. Then I noticed 2 of them were turning brown (not next to each other), and despite watering they died. Oh well no problem, dug them up and replanted. Then a couple of weeks later I notice a few more starting to brown, and this was even after a lot of rain. My thought is that the rock is getting too hot and causing the ground to become dry, but not sure. Can anyone help me?

is the weed barrier the type that allows moisture thru?

is the rock bed in full sun?

if i read you correctly, the boxwoods are IN the rock bed? (not beside?). if that is the case, and you have comfirmed the first question, then you are probably right

my last possibility is that roots were not well developed before the heat came in, this may especially be true for if you planted late in the spring...that compounded with the rock heat may be causing the stress...try root stimulator, and increase the depth of the watering to make sure the roots dig deep instead of shallow?

lastly, try an organic mulch until the shrubs are stable and healthy.

good luck
