Here's something I cannot figure out. Purchased potting soil in a bag, though somewhat moist, does not get moldy. Same thing for bagged compost. However, when I mixed them together with other amendments and put a lid on the container, one week later there is white fuzz all over the surface! And yes, corn meal was one of the amendments. Why does this happen and can I still use the potting soil?

Corn meal is like crack for fungi, that's probably where it is coming from.

The short answer is that yes, it should be fine for use as fungus is not always a bad thing, there are good and bad fungi out there and generally the corn meal feeders have a beneficial effect by killing off other fungi.
