Can you look at the base of the tree and see a flare where the roots start to spread out? If not you need to dig or wash the soil away from the trunk. If the root flare is not exposed, then the tree bark will rot away at the base. The first symptoms are that the tree gets sick and bugs come and attack it.
Next I would spray every surface of the plant with liquid seaweed diluted at 3 ounces per gallon. If you don't have seaweed then spray with milk to the same dilution. The milk or seaweed helps the microbes that live on the surface of the tree fight off the pests.
