I purchased my tree in January 2001. The nursery delivered and planted it.
It's been doing well, but this spring I noticed damage to the lower trunk.
There is an irregular vertical gash or opening on the trunk about 17 inches long and 1/2 inch wide in some placces. It looks like the inside of the tree is trying to grow to the outside and some of the bark is loose.
I called the nursery and was told it sounded like mower or some other kind of damage, but I doubt it. The mower goes nowhere near the tree.
They suggested applying a cornmeal paste and wait to see what happens.
Another nursery, also on the Dirt Doctor's list, recommeded sick tree goop, but they were out of it at the time.
I'm very concerned about the tree and hope someone can recommend a good cure.

Well, you can always hit it with a bit of Hydrogen pyroxide to kill any potential pathogens in the wound, then follow up with Tree Trunk Goop.

The formula and method are listed in the top of the forum.
