I have St. Augustine grass in my backyard and a dog - not a good combination. I have large areas of no grass at all around trees (he likes to hunt squirrels) and I also have several running paths. The dog has a kennel and is in the house a lot of the time but this damage occurred several years ago when my husband was home recovering from surgery and let him have full run of the yard. We have tried putting out bermuda seed, St. Augustine plugs, and last year we put out sod and fenced off the area. A little grass came up in a few areas - but most of it died. We have a lot of shade in the backyard. I'm not sure what to do and I'm frustrated. Can I have both a yard and my dog? HELP!

I have both, including the shade, but my dog only rips it up with I'm out there playing with her.

How often do you water and for how long?
How high do you mow?
How often and with what do you fertilize?

You can have both a dog and a yard. But you have to be smart with the yard options.

The best seed for shade/sun and a dog is a turf-type mulch.

Have you ever tried it?

Hi,

You might want to check out Celebration Turfgrass. I recently planted it on one side of my house. It has all the good qualities of Bermuda, but is more shade tolerant. It does well in high traffic areas and repairs quickly. It is used on golf courses and sports fields. So it might work with your puppies!

Just 'google' it!

Good luck!
