I am getting ready to create some new shrub and flower beds. I live in Charlotte, NC. I can't find lava sand anywhere and ordering it online would be too expense due too shipping costs. Is Rock Phosphate a good alternative? What is Rock Phosphate and what is it good for? I couldn't find any info in the Library. The only organic products anyone carries around here comes from Espoma and I believe they do carry Rock Phosphate.

I normally see it referred to as Soft Rock Phosphate:

I am in Dallas and can only do the same searches you can. You may want to get the yellow pages out and take a look there if you haven't already. Good Luck.

you should be able to find the espoma products at a local garden supply store. Here in Wilmington I get espoma green sand and rock phosphate at "Farmers Supply" on Oleander Dr. I get cottonseed meal and alfalfa pellets (50pound bags for $12.50) at a local feed mill, Burgaw Milling.
Good Luck
