my Texas A&M older daughter (grad) has been chastizing my adding cat litter(used) to my organic composting. She claims it contains organisms that will be harmful, if I add the composted results to my vegtable garden. I breaks down very well, with all the other yard, kitchen scraps. She claims she learned this at A&M , in one of her classes. I have never heard Dr. Garret mention this. Would appreciate some knowledgable imput on this.........Ron

I believe Mr. Howard Garrett and Mr. Malcolm Beck would tell you that it is totally ok to compost anything that once lived! So yes it ok. Just use common sense and balance and caution.

However I would suggest to be on the safe side, add a little dry molasses to your compost pile when doing this. Also add a liitle more carbon matter to the pile (leaves, sawdust, hay, etc.). This will create a healthier balance of carbon and nitrogen ratios. Also it will increase the healthy aerobic beneficial microbes in the decomposing mixture, needed for building better humates in the mature compost.

As long as the kitty litter does not have baking soda in it, I would compost it without worry. Baking soda is a non selective fungicide and is being used more and more in kitty litter.

If you are planning to compost your cat litter, you may want to consider using World's Best Cat Litter.
Quote:
It is a 99% dust free cat litter that is organic and non-toxicIt is made from whole kernel corn with no harmful chemicals, clays or perfumes.
We have started using it and transfer all waste except for the solids to the compost bin.

That's a great comment, I was going to suggest the same thing.

We foster strays at our house for a shelter and have lots of...uuh..umm...raw material. We switched to that litter just like you, recently and have found it to be great. One of our compost piles is of random ingredients, and we've been throwing it in there. I put it in there because we have it blocked off from our dogs, that seem to love the kitty prizes. Our vet says it wont hurt them unless it's a clay based litter, but the thought of the dogs coming to lick our faces; Not good.
