This mourning I watched a Blue Jay caching food. I could not tell what it was, but he placed it on the ground, then covered it up with a some mulch. A couple of House Sparrows flew over to watch, but did not bother the cache.
Blue Jays often cache food and will return to dine as the need arises.
At the end of the last ice age in North America, oak trees moved north faster than would have been projected. One theory is that Blue Jays caching acorns helped accelerate the northward expansion.
