I was out in the garden today pulling up the spent cucumber vines that were planted last spring, squashing the last few wrinkled survivors for the chickens to enjoy. The seeds are very nutritious and we all know how refreshing cucumbers can be, I guess even for chickens.

It’s been about a week since the fall greens took their last move from the seed trays to the raised beds. It looks as though they have doubled in size.

I’ve applied one application of Garrett Juice plus fish and Mother Nature has helped their development with cooler temperatures and just a bit of rain. Cool, clean water from our well supplements what we don’t receive from the sky.

Starting next week we can begin to snip away at some of the leaves for soups and salads. Trimming not only gives you an early crop but it encourages vigorous growth of the plant. I’ve had a hard freeze take out the entire top part of a plant only to come back a week or so later, stronger than ever.
