I am at the International Society for Behavioral Ecology annual meeting and have seen some interesting studies, many of which are pretty esoteric. Here's an outline of a study on Tree Swallows. Tree Swallows are a common spring and fall migrant through Texas, and a few winter in the southern part of the state.

Tree Swallows are socially monogamous within each breeding season. DNA tests are revealing there is more to the story.

Researchers from the University of Wisconsin and University of Oslo, Norway have been studying Tree Swallow paternity.

The studies indicate that there is extra-pair paternity in 81% of the broods examined. There were up to 6 different sires for 6 different young.

More experienced (older) females produced broods with a greater number of sires when they were closely related to their social mate.
