I've used a tube feeder for a few years but took it down this summer because I'd finally tired of feeding all the squirrels and rats. But I miss the finches and cardinals enough to give it another shot. There seems to be plenty of feeders out there labeled "squirrel proof". But since none of them are particularly inexpensive I'd rather not experiment. Can anyone recommend a squirrel/rat-proof feeder that isn't hideous looking?

We have a fine mesh sack that we fill with niger seeds. We get goldfinches, pine siskins, and house finches on this.

I have an antique birdbath that I use as a feeder. Every morning I fill it up with a mix of higher quality seeds and get a huge variety of birds sitting around the edge, all eating together. I always get jay and cardinals as well as many others. Every once in awhile I get a squirrel, but that's maybe once a day. I wouldn't waste money on something that's supposed to be squirrel proof. You will never get rid of them.

Tony - thanks for the idea... I like it.

Sandi - If like you I had one squirrel per day (and apparently no rats) I never would've posted in the first place - it wouldn't be concern.
