At what height do you mow your lawn? What kind of lawn grass do you have?

I mow high because the higher you let the grass grow, the deeper the roots will grow and this is important. It could be a life or death situation for your lawn, with the current water restrictions as we get into the drier months ahead!

My lawn is mostly a mixture of Saint Augustine and (unfortunately) Bermuda. I also have horse herb and other pretty ground covers.

My mulching mower has 5 height positions. I put it at the highest level (except under the hammock).

How about you?

Two years ago I not only had my shaded St Augustine at the highest setting, but I was letting it go several weeks before mowing. It was about 10 inches high before I mowed. When St Aug grows in the shade, it is noticeably thinner than in full sun, so it would flop over and look shaggy. My wife finally got me to lower the deck height. Now I'm one notch off of the highest setting.

Last year we had construction and a drought, so I had a very poor looking lawn. This year the 32 inches of rain has nursed my lawn all the way back beyond the best it's ever looked previously. I had some weeds at the beginning of the season, but they have mostly gone away now.
