Last Saturday a White-winged Dove was calling from the chimney top of a neighbors home in McKinney.

White-winged Doves are expanding their range. At one times they were very rare in North Texas, but they are now fairly common. They are still very rare in the winter, however, so this was an unusual sighting.

Maybe so in some places, but my parents live in Duncanville and have had nearly one hundred white wings come to their feeders for the past several months!

This is not one-ups-manship or Texas brag but last fall there was a standing cornfield near my house whose yield was so poor, the farmer decided to just shred it and disk it into the ground for fertilizer. The field sat idle before he plowed it for about three days. During that time, literally thousands of WWD's came to the field to eat the corn every evening. Every flock was from 25-200 birds, constantly landing and flying away with full bellies. Where did they come from, where did they go - I have no idea.
He plowed the field and I never saw them again.

Must have been a lot of load "squeaking" when they flew off. That must have been a site. Reminds me of the first time I saw a large flock of robins. I had seen a few at a time until one day I drove past an empty lot in my old M streets neighborhood and there were hundreds. I just had to stop in the middle of the street..I couldn't believe my eyes.

Speaking of robins, we drove into our land last weekend & there was a flock of robins in our field. They were huge! Big fat ones. The few we have at home in Plano are much smaller. Wonder why? Pollution?

I reported seven feeding in my back yard in North Richland Hills this year. I checked the records and they began being spotted in our area about 2003.
