Although this thread is about compost, I put it here because it affects my lawn.

Ok, here goes, my lawn has been in decline for a while so I decided to try some things.

First, I applied some horticultural cornmeal and then about a week later applied some manure compost that I bought in bulk from our local garden supplier.

I noticed that the compost has a lot of horse manure in it and I have read that manure is strong and should be completely composted before using it.

So, with such big chunks of horse manure in my compost, does anyone think that it is too powerful to have been applied to my law?.

It is supposed to rain heavy tomorrow so maybe it will wash in a bit.

Can you see the actual manure? If so, it is not composted & should not be used until it is composted! Keep in mind that wet compost will clump. If your compost has raw manure in it, I would return it or get a refund.

The only way you can tell if it is finished composting is to smell it. I can get horse manure compost from our stables that is 3 years old, smells fresh like a forest floor, but still has that 'horse apple' appearance.
