I have some weeds in my yard that are low growing, single rooted, woody feeling weeds that really hurt to step on. They occassionally produce a small purple flower. I have pictures of them but have no idea how to post them on here. Any ideas what this may be?

There are a number of common names for it, roadside aster, Texas aster, annual aster, etc. I believe there is a thread on this forum that has more info.

That is definately it and after reading the articles on it I think I am in a world of hurt. I have an acre lot that I am trying to get rid of it on and I have spent about an hour a day pulling these weeds. Of course with the dry weather it is like pulling rebar out of concrete. I don't think I have made a dent yet. Is there any quick way of getting rid of these besides pulling? If I can get ahead of these maybe they will be easier to control next year.

I've asked Howard to put this plant on the home page, probably in the "plant of the week" section. Keep checking, he said he would do it.
