What’s the best bird seed? This depends a lot on which birds you are trying to attract. Here is a quick review of some good choices.

Black oil sunflower – The best overall choice and popular with a wide variety of species.

Nyjer ® (sometimes called thistle) – Very popular with goldfinches. Offer in a “seed sock.”

What to avoid – A lot of seed mixes sold in grocery stores and the “big box’ stores contain mostly milo and millet. These are small, round reddish seeds, check the ingredients on the bag. Milo and millet is OK for ground-feeding species like doves and quail. Most perching birds like cardinals and finches will not feed on milo or millet so do not offer in your hanging feeders.

Visit the www.Birdzilla.com Web site – the ABC’s section – for more details. The Sam’s Guide to Enjoying Backyard Birds CD - www.samsbirds.com - has lots of information on bird feeding.
