Is there a non herbicide way to kill prickly pear short of physical removal?

I agree with Robert. If the plant is too large, break or cut off the sections and compost (great compost material). After that, mow the remains every once in awhile. The cactus will try to come back for several months or so depending on underground reserves. A caution if you're not familiar with prickly pears, the needles hurt but the fine hairs at the base of the needle will irritate you for days if you get them in your skin.
