We have little dirt piles in our yard and I'm not sure what they are. Does anyone know? If so, are they harmful to the grass? What do you do?

Might be wasp nests. There are several species that nest in the soil. If this is what they are, they will not harm the yard or people. You have to almost beat these wasps to make them bite you. If you watch the yard, you should be able to see them go in the holes with food for the young.

There has been a lot of rain this past 3 days. Have you kicked the top of the dirt piles?

If you do, my guess is you will see swarms of fire ants scramble about. They pile to the surface when their underground tunnels become waterlogged... they need air, just like us!

There are many effective ways to get rid of them. Search this site on fire ants, orange oil, neem and/or nematodes.

Are they made up of coarse bits of dirt and about an inch tall by an inch across? These are earth worm holes.

Or are they made up of very fine particles and several inches tall and across? These are fire ant mounds.

David, the piles are coarse dirt about 1 inch tall by 1 inch wide. Does that mean they are earth worms? Are they harmful to the grass? Can I get rid of them?

If you can stick your little finger down in the hole they are crawfish.

If they are the earth worm piles, then you are in luck. They are the very best thing for your lawn, yard and gardens. You most definetly do not want to get rid of them. We are all pretty much working to increase the number of earth worms in our yards. People pay good money to purchase earth worm castings to improve their soil. Earth worms improve earation of your soil, convert organic matter into nutrients for your plants, and are extreemly beneficial.

Those are earthworm holes and they are simply getting air. They are also tunneling all through your yard and aerating it and depositing waste as they go. You WANT them!

If the holes get bigger, then look for crayfish, as they like to eat earthworms... and they are waaaaaay lost in your yard...

Dave-
Depending where you live, you could have crawdads when it is so wet. On our land, there are areas that don't dry out, maybe b/c of the white rock about 1'-2' below the surface, and we see clumps of neatly made piles all over- & holes. Had no idea til we saw dead crawfish after everything dried up!
