Hello gardeners! May I ask advice? I felt it necessary to cut back some under limbs from an oak tree in the backyard, in essence to view the lake from the kitchen window. A friend told me that I must paint each area where I fell a limb in order to keep insects and disease from affecting this 8 year old oak tree. Is this true? I don't want to kill it. 8) [size=18]

    Patricia,

All cuts should be painted (I use a tar type roof patching material) on Oaks. Having said that, I've been told that White Oaks, like the Burr Oak, need not be so treated.

It's nice to have you with us and to make sure you get some good answers, I'm moving your post over to the tree forum. You'll get more reviews there.

Well, I am afraid this is a new one on me... and to everything organic I have read for the past 5 years. I never paint any cuts, since it simply introduces paint/tar solvents to a fresh wound. Would you dip a cut finger into BBQ paint, tar or Sherwin Williams glossy black?

Spray it with Garrett Juice, or pack it with a diatomaceous earth/cornmeal paste if you screwed up the cut bigtime... but just leave it alone!

I leave almost all cuts alone.

If you're in an Oak Wilt area and afraid of that, or if the wound has problems, use the Tree Trunk Goop formula, listed at the top of the forum.

Do not cut the limb flat against the trunk, come out an inch or so. Do not paint the cuts UNLESS you are in an area with OAK WILT. If you can WAIT until December or Jan to trim those limbs on your oak. The Insects that transmit/carry oak wilt are not active.
