I have been told that rye will kill out the St Augustine. Is this true? I live in the Arlington area and have a shady yard. I have cut my trees up to get max. light but my back yard has very little St. Augustine left after 3 years of overseeding with rye. Is the rye killing the St. Augustine?

My guess is you have a fungus taking out the St Augustine. It could be insects, too, so I'd take a two pronged approach. Hit it with both corn meal (20 pounds per 1,000 square feet) and beneficial nematodes. Reapply the corn meal in 60-90 days.

St Augustine in the shade will never be very dense but it should still thrive better than other grasses.
