I have a male cardinal who for the last several months has been banging at every window in my house. Does anyone know how to stop him? Is there a spray that I could use that he doesn't like?

OMG we have the same problem but I don't think these are cardinals. Our subdivision is brand new and my neighbors and I all thought that perhaps when they built our houses that maybe they destroyed their nesting sites. Perhaps if we put up birdhouses for them to use it would solve the problem? There is also a gadget you can buy and hook up to your sprinkler that looks like an owl. It is motion activated and will shoot a stream of water at the bird without harming them (hopefully.)

I lived in San Antonio many moons ago and had the same problem. Someone told me it was because the bird saw itself in the window and thought it was another bird. The banging is a territorial thing, as it thought it was competing with another male bird (its evil twin, perhaps) with an incredibly hard head. In S.A. it was a red bird also, which I assumed to be a cardinal... maybe it wasn't.

Perhaps if your window is less reflective it will help. We have solar screens on our home which appear opague from the outside (black metal mesh that is canted diagonally down).

Good luck,
Chris

I have heard of birds running into windows because they couldn't see them, too transparent. For this problem put something on your windows, be creative, to let the birds know that there is something there.

It is a territorial thing. I have a male that will sit on the window of my truck and attack his reflection in the side mirrors. It's hilarious to watch and doesnt seem to bother him. Keeps him occupied during the day.
