I need help. My wife and I moved to Denton, TX and bought a house before we realized that the ENTIRE lawn is mondo grass. We have lived there for going on two years and I have several problems/questions for anyone who can help. First, how do you care for an entire lawn (.5 acre) of mondo grass? I spent a fortune watering it last summer, and still had some patches turn brown. I tried mowing it, thinking that I could give it a somewhat manicured look, but the cut ends and last 1/2 inch of blade turned brown. This year I decided to let it grow, but now my lawn looks like it's ready for the hay baler (not really, the grass is only about 6 inches tall, but it's not uniformly one height). Also, it is not densely planted, it seems like the previous owners planted sprigs, rather than clumps of it, and weeds are a continuous problem. What can I do with this? Am I able to apply regular fertilizer and weed control products, or will they kill the mondo grass? ANY help or advice would be appreciated!

first,,,,mondo grass likes partial shade,,,,if you dont have partial shade then it will never be a sweet lawn.

second,,,,milorganite the heck out of it,,,mondo loves to FEED so give it what it wants!

third,,,,if your heart isnt into it and you dont have some shade, call a scaper and see if he would be interested in digging it all up so the scaper or nursery could repot it and sell it,,,,,,and maybe you could get some free sod out of the deal!

just some suggestions!

if you dont want a sod lawn maybe you could switch it over to a texas long leaf jasmine?

Maybe you are not a mondo grass person. It will eventually be more dense than normal grass and choke out everything, if you leave it completely alone. Our mondo grass lives from rainstorm to rainstorm. Every soil is different, so maybe yours needs more water. Are you watering it weekly or less often, but very deeply? If you are watering it more often, you are asking for trouble.

You are sitting on a gold mine if you want to take advantage of it. If you pot up your mondo into 2-inch pots, they will retail for $1.25 per pot. You should be able to get over 780,000 pots from a half acre. You could pot up your first 15,000 pots and have a yard sale!

The brown spots may be related to a fungus rather than water. Try cornmeal or potassium bicarbonate.
