1)For getting rid of fire ants & other types of ants in the yard, is application of garlic & hot pepper juice the solution? Does this get rid of them completely or do they just move to another place - similar to applications of Amdro?
2) For applying fertilizer to flower beds & potted plans, is CGM ok or a bad choice compared to horticultural corn meal? I've some CGM left over from my yard application & would prefer to use it rather than spend lots more $$ on buying a sack of horticultural corn meal.

Thanks!

For fireants...

1) An organic bait is available by Greenlight, you can buy it at Wal-mart. Our local organic radio program endorses it.

2) A drench is available for individual mounds, Anti-Fuego Soil Conditioner, by Garden-ville. Call a local organic nursery and they should have it. Also you can look for a distributor on garden-ville.com

I have used both methods. The drench kills the ants and the larvae on contact, and is good for the soil. The bait also kills the ants, I used it with success within 5 days of spreading it on the mounds. I had 6 very large fireant mounds and after using these products I get a new little one every month or so. I just mix up the drench and they're gone.

Nothing will completely eliminate the fireants, but if you practice organic methods they won't like your soil as much as your neighbors. Too much competition from everything else in the soil.

Oh, you can also buy beneficial nematodes from a nursery, they eat the ant larvae and are supposed to work for 2 years or so.

Tom did a great job of answering your fireant question.

Yes, you can use the CGM as fertilizer. It is much higher in nitrogen than the hort. corn meal. Just don't use it in seed beds :D
