Why don't you try takign cuttings?

In the late spring, take sopme 6-inch cuttings off new growth green wood and clear the leaved from all but the top inch or inch and a half. You can use either rooting hormone or saliva (indirectly!) to moisten the bare part and plant so that the bottom 4 inches or so is in good potting soil. Keep it somewhere with some light yet sheltered from direct sun, and make sure to not let the soil dry out. Don't drown it, but don't let it dry up. After several weeks (I'd guess 4-6) you should find that each of the cuttings has its own root system now.

As for the seeds, I don't know on this particular tree. You mihgt try refridgerating them next year for about 45 days and then planting them. Many seeds need to stratify in the cold like that before they work.

Collect the pods in late July. Pick them off the tree, not the ground. Open the pods to get the seeds out - it wasn't clear if you were planting the whole thing or not - and who knows - may-be it doesn't matter. Pick the largest, best filled out seeds. Plant them outdoors in the ground or in containers right away or in early fall. Any chilling requirements would be satisfied by leaving them out in the weather.

Also, redbuds may not sprout until the second spring after they are planted; however most should sprout the first spring.

If you are getting the seeds from a purple leaf or a white flowered tree - these unusual varieties may not produce viable seeds. I don't know either way.

Hope this helps.
