I live in an area on Eagle Mountain Lake with a high rate of Live Oak and Red Oak Wilt. The Utility co. has contracted a tree cutting company to cut back trees close to the power lines. They are going to be cutting my live oaks and red oaks on our property this week. What are the time periods that are safe to prune the Oaks to prevent the Wilt disease?
Thank you,
Sue

make sure they don't top the tree, it will weaken it and make it much more suceptible to disease, plus it will look ugly.

From all I've heard this is pretty late to prune, the trees are just starting their new growth.

And I don't think pruning a tree makes any difference for Oak wilt, it is passed through the roots. The controls they use in the Austin area are to trench a line at some point past the infected trees.

I have read that pruning at this time of year can attract the beetle that can also spread the disease. Once the tree is infected is goes through the root system to other trees. I think that what I read is that in this part of Texas you should not prune the Red Oaks and Live Oaks from Feb. through June 1. However, there seems to be differing opinions on the time period.
