Hello All,
I am new to this website, yet I need a question answered by someone ASAP....I read that lava rocks help to deter cats and squirrels from messing with flower and garden beds. I read that the animals don't like walking on them....I have a problem with both. I bought some and have no problem putting them in my flower beds and I hope it works. My question is this: Can I use them in my vegetable beds to deter the 10 or so squirrels that love to dig in my raised bed veggie garden boxes? Used to have a dog that took care of that problem, but currently don't have that pleasure. So I need to battle the squirrels, without harming them. Are the so called "volcanic" lava rocks( I bought the red ones), OK to use for veggie gardens? Are they treated with anything that will cause harm to the veggie plants or the soil or to us humans as we eat them????
Thanks for your info and help!!!! greenbeans........ :D

Lava sand & lava rock are great to use in your garden. I don't know if squirrels are repelled by lava. Keep in mind that if you use the lava rock in your garden, your knees will suffer when you work in your garden. Use a hot pepper spray and/or sprinkle the hottest dry pepper in your garden to repel squirrels. You will need to re-apply the spray after a rain - not sure about the dry pepper. Lava is not be treated with anything; there is no need. Always read the bag you buy (of anything) to make sure. Lava is usually moist (water) in the bag to keep dust to a minimum.
