how do I make sure I do not put too many nematodes per square ft simply by sloshing them on with a water can as howard says he does ?

Figure out what your nematode coverage should be and mark out that area on your soil. Then do your best at getting even coverage based on how many gallons you have in the can. That's about as precise as you can get with a watering can.

Do what David said & you'll be OK. Don't worry about getting too many nematodes out. If you have a problem you are probably better off getting too many out rather than not enough. If you put too many out all you will harm is your budget (not too much).

The first time I did it, I had trouble matching my distribution method with the area. Then, I tested my ordinary mechanics and my can's flow rate with ordinary water and then diluted the nematode batch to match. Instead of distributing 2-3 gallons, I settled on diluting it to 15-20 gallons of frequently mixed product. It's easier for me to get uniform coverage by increasing the dilution/volume to accommodate my mechanics than to do it the other way around. It still is important to deliver them promptly because they will drown if they remain suspended in the water for more than 1-2 hours.
