I have a small cabinet shop and use lots of hardwood. My planer produces small chips (not sawdust) that have worked well in my wife's beds. We have one that is mulched with mahogany and getting ready to have another mulched with Maple.

That being said, can softwoods be used for mulch? I have a trashcan full of Fir shavings from a quick project that I did for my wife. Can pine-type woods be used as mulch? Are there any drawbacks to doing so?

All of my wood is natural and I never use treated lumber. The chips come off the raw wood before stain and finish.

Any wood chips can be used, but you will need to add nitrogen. decomposing wood robs nitrogen from the soil
