I traditionally use Mosquito dunks to kill mosquitos in my dog's water bucket. They work great in that fresh water. However I am also experimenting with dissolving my old bank receipts in a trash can full of water. The mosquito dunks didn't touch the mosquito larvae in that sour smelling water. I think the pH of the water was off too far from normal to support the mosquito killing microbes in the dunks.
So I tried sprinkling some orange oil on the water. The oil floats on the water as we've all seen oil do, but inside of 48 hours, all the mosquito larvae were dead. Funny but the oil has disappeared from the surface of the water. I'm thinking it got absorbed by some of the paper mush breaking the surface.
