I planted my tomatoes last Saturday evening under mostly cloudy skies. Sunday was close to the same. Sunday night we received 2 1/2" of hard rain. Lost a couple then. Tuesday and Wednesday bright sun. Now I have only 10 left.
These plants were started from seed on 3/02/04 using soil blocks. They looked super when I planted them. I have raised beds with hairy vetch grown on them over winter for the mulch. We have sandy soil thats been composted. Did I plant too young of plant?

Did you acclimate them to the full sun? If you move plants from sheltered places to the full sun garden, they can die very quickly. The heavy rain didn't help matters either. It probably beat them into the ground. I'm not a fan of peat blocks, pots or peat in general; that probably wasn't your problem since they looked good when you planted them. No, they weren't too young. Keep in mind that you can start them directly in the garden. People pot them or buy them in pots to get an early jump.

I use water teepees to protect them from precipation and extremes in temp. The wall of water surrounding them moderates their environment.
