Forum readers have hopefully read of the volunteer program undertaken by some of us last fall. We are going back to the church this Saturday, April 3 and invite all who would like to help to join us! It is a nice day trip and you can meet and work beside other organic gardening buffs, as well as the kind and generous people of the church. There will be a potluck lunch at 1:00 p.m. so bring something to share...drinks, napkins, fruit, snacks, entree, side dish, whatever you want to bring.
Forum member Pamzilla is a member of the church and sent me this information on the day:
Meet at church at 10AM. Lunch at 1PM.
OUR GOALS:
1)Treat fire ants by broadcasting horticultural cornmeal. I have spot treated existing mounds. Even if we don't achieve eradication, we have fertilized.
2)Do some landscape planting. Low water, low maitenance plants. Mulch
new plants, old plantings and bare spots. Plant new tree in cemetery.
3) Fertilize the two squares of grass in front of church doors. This area
looks bad and needs help.
NEEDED ITEMS:
Plants: Texas sage, heavenly bamboo nandina, red yucca, Japanese
boxwood and phlox. Sam's Nursery will sell ME one gallon shrubs for $5
bucks each. Feel free to pick some up and bring them. We will plant it!
Cornmeal: I have $200 of church money to buy cornmeal for the ants. I
haven't found a source for less than $12/50lbs. Any ideas? At this
rate we can do about 2 acres so if we can come up with a better deal or
get some donated the more we can do.
Fertilizer: Something like humate or Texas Tea. I will pick up some.
Bring any organic fertilizer and we will use it too. Simple and what you can afford to donate will be gratfully accepted.
Equipment: Spreaders and planting tools.
LUNCH: Potluck at 1:00 p.m.
I am making a yummy grass-fed beef chili! I am pretty sure the ladies
of the church will help out again but if there is something special
you'd like for lunch, feel free to bring it.
