We have a waterfront lot on Cedar Creek Lake. This is a well developed
area, houses all along the lake front. We have about a dozen old crape myrtles seperating our lot from our neighbors. Yesterday, I found three large branches felled by beavers and several spots where they appearently were sharpening their teeth. I'd like to stop them from killing my trees without harming the beavers.
Anyone with any ideas?

I think you have to face the fact that you live in a place where there's wildlife. Deer do the same thing to landscapes all over the place. YOU have to adjust, not them.

They may be beavers or nutria, in either case the result is the same.
I helped a friend of mine plant about 100 shrubs at Cedar Creek lake. Within weeks, they were all gone, cut off at the ground.
I had a 3 acre pond behind my house in Coppell. We planted 10 three to five inch caliper trees. By morning one of them was down and all the branches stripped off. I put hardware cloth around the others and have not has a problem in 3 years. Just cut it about 5 times the diameter of the tree and zip tie the ends together.

The only effective way of eliminating the pesty results of beavers and nutria is trapping and relocating. If you are interested in trapping and relocating these unwelcomed backyard neighbors, let us know...we can help. You'd be suprised how easy and inexpensive it is (compared to replacing your fallen ornamental trees!)
