I have a couple of trees that are playing host to very heavy mistletoe infestation. What is the best way to deal with this?

I know it's getting close to the holidays and all but I'd still like to get rid of the stuff.

Heavy mistletoe means one thing- the tree is in stress.

I'm going out on a limb here (ha ha!) and will guess that these are Elm Trees. The ones I see with the most Mistletoe are American Elms that are in poor health.

The only way to get rid of it for sure is to excise it then clean the wood it was cut form with pyroxide. The trees themselves are in bad shape for this to have happened to begin with. I'd advise reviewing the trees' status and getting the sick tree treatment in motion ASAP.

daveP, you have very nice looking mistletoe. I have one tree that has it & it doesn't look near as good! Seriously, The Ent or others, how does a healthy tree fight off mistletoe? The birds deposit the seeds on the tree and it grows. Some trees (like the Elm) seem to be more susceptible. Why? :?:

We have 20 acres E of Bohnam & don't live there yet & have no H2O. Have about 10 ac. of woods & since owning the land (2 yrs) have been on a mission: pulling out green briar, virginia creeper (I think) & wild grapevine-all these looked as tho they were killing the trees. Saw 2-3 bunches of mistletoe last year and now there's 25-30 bunches!! A 'tree guy' is coming Sat to look at the situation & all we know is to prune out the brances that have the mistletoe then do the sick tree treatment. If anyone else has suggestions, we'd appreciate it!
