I have an area of yard that needs new grass, approximately 500 sq ft. The existing soil is very hard but composted to a degree. It receives adequate sunlight. What is the best solution to prepare the soil for new grass?

Lots and lots of compost!

Or just spread some form of cheap grain meal or protein fertilizer all over the soil. You can make a tea out of too, and use it as a spray over the soil. Make sure to put some molasses in it. This will stimulate more beneficial microbial growth, and organic matter in the soil, in order to build up soil conditioning and fertility.

that is about the size of a pallet of grass??? what kind of grass do you want there??? add a little good compost and then just sod it solid.. if you want bermuda, then wait till it gets a little hotter and just plant the seed... that would be more economical cause your just buying the seed... otherwise, a pallet of grass should run about 100 bucks or more depending on the type of grass you want... quick and easy...
