Hi there!

I have a pasture with huge oak trees and two horses. One of the horses has been there for 5 years now without a problem. Our problem is the 2 year old that has discovered the roots of the trees under very little sand. She pushes the dirt away and chews on the roots. My husband is having a fit about it and has put cattle panels around many of them, but she just goes and finds more. We never see her doing this so it is hard to discipline her for it.

Now, we have about 20 of these trees with chewed roots out there and he is wanting to put "black tar" on the roots to 'protect' them. I need to know what to do. First of all, is there any solution to the horse chewing on the roots and second, what should we do with these damaged roots? We don't want to lose our trees, but we cannot get rid of the horses either.

Thanks for any help you can give me.

From what I understand the black goop doesn't really do alot of good - I would use the Sick Tree Treatment that the Dirt Doctor has posted http://www.dirtdoctor.com/view_question.php?id=130 As for prevention: have you tried sprinkling cayenne pepper around the trees? Or perhaps you could buy some habenero peppers (fresh) and fresh garlic and grind these up in a blender and spray the perimeter of the trees. The dry pepper didn't work for me but the garlic and habenero worked wonders to keep the cats out of my garden and kids sandbox.

Best of luck,
Christina
