I am new to the organic program. When the handouts refer to "cornmeal" is that just regular cornmeal, like we cook with?

I realize the corn gluten meal is different, but I am just wanting clarification when the word "cornmeal" is used.

Thanks to anyone who can straighten me out.

For our purposes, they are the same. I think food grade corn meal has been better cared for as far as temperature and humidity are concerned, but that's about it.

Also for our purposes, the best place to get corn meal is at a feed store where they have it in 50-pound bags for between $4 and $7.

The cornmeal referred to in the handouts is Horticultural Cornmeal. It is different from regular cornmeal in that it is from the outside of the kernel rather than the whole kernel. Both will work but the horticultural has more punch per pound. If using regular cornmeal, make sure it is from whole corn and ground fine enough so that every critter in the neighborhood doesn't come to your house for dinner. Horticultural Cornmeal is available at almost every feed store & nursery in this area.
