As most of you know, I'm known on several sustainable gardening forums as "Captain Compost". I sell aerobic hot processed compost to local farmers and garden stores. I also teach sustainable farming classes at Master Gardener groups and at the Birmingham Botanical Gardens.

I keep getting asked questions from local friends and gardeners, about how infamous diseases like "MAD COW", how does it affect composting.

I think we need to put a "sticky" or "announcement" on at least on one of our forums, fully explaining in laymen's term, what "MAD COW" disease really is. Then how does it effect sustainable farmers who use passive or hot active composting methods, as well as various compost tea recipes.

Thanks for your input and your time.
Happy Gardening!

Do y'all think this scare is going to slow down the sales of blood and bone meal in the USA this year?

I do not think that this will slow down the sell of blood and bone meal, personally.

Enzyme11 made a great argument on this subject on another post, how this might slow down, or at least alarm some farmers, on the sales of animal feeds that are made from composted bovine parts.

Currently there is only one living cow out of over a 100 million cows in the USA with the symptoms, that is under strict control, and under tight security. That's not counting the already dead composted cows that we know nothing about yet around the world.

However since the disease can only be possibly transmitted by consuming the brain or spinal column of the sick cow, I doubt if these prions will survive past the incredible appetites of powerful soil/compost aerobic bacteria, fungi, actinoycetes, protozoa, etc. and of course the amazing earthworms.

If we keep preaching to the world about important and powerful hot active composting, green manuring, mulching, and using aerobic teas is in plant/soil fertilization and health, these issues will become totally reduced to zero in the sustainable farming world.

I've found some websites. I'm working on something for you to use with your local folks.
