I have a tree (Oak I think) whose bark is very loose with black underneath. I noticed half of the tree lost it leave much earlier than the other half this year. This began soon after I had a sewer line replaced that it was growing into so I thought it was a lack of water but it seems to be getting worse. What can I do?

Were any major roots severed during this work?

I'd not think it was lack of water (trees do just fine without tapping into pipes) but it could be damage from the work that was done.

First, establish for sure what sort of tree you're looking at. Then, if that black turns out to be fungus, I'd spray the tree with some baking soda or even better Potassium Bicarbonate to kill the fungus.

Then, follow up with the Sick Tree Treatment as described at the top ofthe forum.

Keep us apprised.
