I love pear trees for their shape, color and Spring blossoms but they are absolute sump-pumps and one of my two has been REALLY lowering the ground around it.... to keep my yard level i am thinking about adding an inch or two of compost in the low spot before every mowing.... any thoughts (aside from the fact that all that compost will probably make the tree take off???)

I like the tree, just not the slope it is creating in my nice level yard.

Rowlett - Gumbo soil.... good soil for N. Texas, has gotten lots of compost and other amendments and I use lots of organic ferts....

Pear trees seem to pump a lot of water.

I've grown pears before and never noticed any sinking of the soil. I'm wondering if an air pocket was created under your property when the area was developed? I see no reason that you couldn't fill in the sink as long as you don't cover the root flare.
