nandina spread underground. to stop the spreading, you must dig up the new foundlings...

i usually tug on them until a foot or so of root is exposed, and then cut close to the end. the tallest branches get cut 6" above the ground to keep pruned to a respectable height.

your frustration with them is also their strength. they are very hardy, bugs don't get them. drought doesn't get them. they don't require babying, pesticides, or fertilizers. birds love the berries, the leaves turn a wonderful red over the winter when exposed to sun.

my house in Oak Cliff (Dallas) had them when i moved in 25 years ago....every couple of years i get out the pruning shears and garden gloves and force them back into their zone...alternate years i just prune for height.

some of the prunings have gone to neighbors whose hollies or boxwoods etc have grown old and woody...
if you leave a foot of root, stick it back in the ground in an hour or so, they will thrive and prosper in their new home...

i had never seen them before moving to this old neighborhood in Oak Cliff, but have grown to love their grace and careless arch. i like that they don't want to be pruned with hedge trimmers...but left a little wild and non-geometric...
