Howard, I heard your program on Saturday about the soils and the pines we can succesfully grow. I live near the Scyene Overlook (Jim MIller and Scyene) and we have about 10-20" of black clay, then White Rock under that. In the backyard, we have several cedars, some Bois D'arc and a few Red Oaks.

I asked before about pines, but have since heard that none of them are really fast growing. I like the Dawn Redwoods and wondered if they will do well in the shallow soil and rock?

If not can you recommend a fast growing tree? We aren't really concerned with the shade aspect as much as we love tall trees. We're both in our forties and since we can't live where there are already tall trees, we thought we'd try and plant some very fast growers so that in 15-20 years we'd have them to enjoy.

Are we nuts to try to accomplish this in our soil?

For fast-growers in that kind of soil, I'd say my favorites are the Texas Ash and Burr Oak.

Both grow quickly yet have good healthy strong wood.

Thanks for the suggestions! I just got a catalog from American Forests...they have one of those Bur Oaks from the Mark Twain Cave...I might just try that!

Trees that grow fast also tend to die fast (30-40) is short for a tree.

The Burr Oak should treat you good. Grand tree that will be a legacy for a future generation and not a liability for your retirement nest egg.
